Hi! My name is Jordan Kohanim. :-)
I have been teaching high school English Language Arts for over 16 years in the United States. I was a member of the Review Board for the National Council for Teachers of English (NCTE). I also am a nationally recognized speech and debate coach. I coach ages 9 to 18.
I have been a private tutor for over 50 families--both virtually and in-person. I hold a Bachelor's of Science of English Education from the University of Kennesaw. I am a graduate of Emory University Debate Coaching Workshop. I have presented to numerous teachers, students, and families about how to read, research, write, and present effectively. I am certified through the Advanced Placement board. I have won Teacher of the Year twice at the public high schools at which I taught.
I have left public education so that I might have the freedom to teach fully without the constriction of standardized testing.
ADHD and visual learners are my jam!
I view the English Language Arts classroom as a place to explore the power of language and image. This exploration is done through the vehicle of literature, art, debate, and written and spoken response. Within a global market place that demands an ever-increasing critical thinker, English Language Arts must rise to meet the requirements of a multitude of literacies. Students are no longer able to cling to one or two forms of communication. Instead, they must develop mastery of a variety of modes of speaking, listening, viewing, creating, and writing.
It is my goal to help my students navigate through and excel in this new age of communication by emphasizing critical thinking and rhetoric.
